Patron of Reading 2019-20

Reading is a big focus of what we do at Shrubland Street and this year we are delighted to announce that poet James Carter (author of many fantastic books including : Once upon a Star, The World's Greatest Space Cadet, I'm a Little Alien, The Story of the Electric Guitar, The BIG Beyond and many more) has agreed to be our Patron of Reading for the year.

What is a Patron of Reading?

A Patron of Reading is a school's special children's author, poet, storyteller or illustrator. The school and their patron develop a relationship over a period of time. Everything the patron does is related to helping encourage and develop a reading for pleasure culture in the school: blogs, book recommendations, discussions, plays, book quizzes, poetry bashes, parent sessions, book trailers and school visits. The possibilities are virtually endless.

Who is James Carter?

Or read Benjamin's poem about him.

Day 1

James Carter came in on Monday 16th September 2019 as part of our whole school poetry week. This was a fantastic start to our poetry journey which we linked to the National Poetry Week topic of 'Truth' as well as some work on 'Space' and animals for good measure!

Day 2

James Carter returned to school on Monday 20th January for a 'Space' themed poetry day. He worked with each class to produce some incredible work. We will be uploading some of the finished pieces and photos of the day on here. We look forward to see James again later in the year.
