Art and Design at Shrubland Street
Our aim is to equip all pupils with the skills and confidence to express their own creativity through a range of art, craft and design.
Each year group at Shrubland Street receives at least one hour per week dedicated to the teaching of Arts and Design. A broad curriculum has been planned across the whole school with each half term focusing on a different area of learning. These are drawing skills, textiles, sculpture, painting, cooking, construction and mechanisms. Engaging with these different mediums is designed to instil greater resilience by encouraging perseverance when learning a new skill. Furthermore, we believe that it is important to provide children with range of opportunities so that they can best demonstrate their talents and discover what truly interests them.
Children record their experiences through the use of sketchbooks which they continue to add to throughout KS1 and KS2. This demonstrates their progression throughout their time at Shrubland Street and is a way of reflecting and building on prior skills. We encourage children to use their sketchbook to record ideas, vocabulary, experiment with different mediums and evaluate their work through annotations. Each child is unique and each sketchbook is unique to that child and their creativity.
Across all year groups, children are given the opportunity to explore and analyse the work of famous artists from different time periods, cultures and backgrounds. We hope that by showing children a range of techniques and styles, they can find and develop their own individual style and be confident to express their creativity.
