Music
Music is an extremely important part of the curriculum at Shrubland Street Primary School. All children have an opportunity to take part in a wide range of musical activities, these include: singing, composing using simple tuned and untuned percussion instruments and performing to others. In addition to in-class music lessons, children share their musical talents in assemblies and special concerts.
In the classrooms
Within Key Stage 1 and 2 children experience music through ‘Kapow’. This is a scheme of work which exposes children to all aspects of music including composition and performance to different styles from classical to rap.
Through our music curriculum, we hope to:
- encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which they can build their love of music, self-confidence and sense of achievement as well as learning to express themselves creatively.
- provide opportunities to explore music from different generations, traditions and communities and to have an awareness of a broad range of artists.
- allow children to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding in order to become confident performers, composers and listeners.
Music Development Plan
Each year, school's are expected to have a Music Development Plan, as set out in the national plan for music education. This plan will be updated as a summary before the start of each new academic year.
Schools are asked to publish a summary of their music development plan on their website in order to:
- raise awareness of their music development plan
- promote the school music offer to parents and prospective parents
- give greater opportunity for schools and music hubs to work together
