Phonics and Reading at Shrubland Street
At Shrubland Street all children learn their sounds through the phonics scheme; Read Write Inc. Children are taught in small groups and assessed on a half termly basis. Teaching is fine tuned according to these assessments and groups are organised so that gaps in the children's knowledge and language development can be addressed quickly.
The pronunciation of the phonemes is very important. Please watch the video below so you can help support your child at home to sound the phonemes correctly.
Once a child has achieved the expected standard of phonic competence, in the majority of cases at the end of Year 1, they move on to our reading Scheme which is linked to our phonics programme. This scheme is; Oxford Reading Tree and is a graded scheme that supports reading confidence, encourages challenge and provides a variety of texts for children to enjoy as they move through school. Parents are expected to regularly listen to their child read, while school uses guided reading and reading comprehension sessions to enhance deeper inderstanding of text. This is also supplemented by targetted 1 to 1 support where necessary.
Reading is really important to us at Shrubland Street and we work hard to promote a love of literature.

Shrubland Street Key Texts - 2021-2022
Writing at Shrubland Street
Each Year group themes their learning around a different book each half term. We use a variety of different, rich texts to promote high levels of language, grammar and prose, thinking carefully about the 'Four Purposes for Writing' and therefor exploring a range of different text types. We ensure that the grammar requirements for each year group are delivered through an engaging, 'mastery' approach to writing and that gaps in understanding are quickly spotted and addressed. The children are taught to self and peer assess their writing, making addtions, edits and improvements as part of the writing process. No one gets it perfect first time!
